Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth Appointed Next Chief of Army Staff, To Assume Office on June 30
Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff and will assume office on June 30, 2026, following the retirement of General Upendra Dwivedi. A veteran officer with nearly four decades of service, he has commanded key formations and operational commands across the Indian Army.
The Ministry of Defence stated that the President has approved the appointment of Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, as the next Chief of the Army Staff in the substantive rank of General. The statement noted that his tenure will commence on June 30, 2026, and continue until August 31, 2028.
Lieutenant General Seth is currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, a position he assumed in April this year. He will take charge of the Indian Army as General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, concludes his tenure upon retirement.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Lieutenant General Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over a distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades, he has accumulated extensive experience across operational, strategic, capability development, and institutional domains.
His command assignments include leading an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre, and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the government statement, he has also commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Army’s premier strike formations.
Lieutenant General Seth has held several high-profile leadership positions, including General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, and Commander of both the South Western Command and the Southern Command. He holds the rare distinction of commanding two operational Army Commands and providing strategic oversight across critical theatres for more than two and a half years.
Throughout his service, Lieutenant General Seth has occupied several key staff and strategic appointments that played an important role in operational planning, force management, and capability development within the Indian Army.
His appointment comes at a crucial time for the Indian Army, bringing to the top military leadership an officer with extensive command experience, strategic expertise, and nearly four decades of distinguished service across some of the country's most significant operational and institutional assignments.
